Wood Kiln Firing (Pray to the flame)
May 13 (Fri), 14 (Sat)
It all started from one member when drinking last year....
Members of Kanakure-kai, and at Tonoh-kan will put fire to each kiln on the same day.
These day, gas kiln is more popular because of its practicality, and stable productivity. Type of kiln has evolved through ages, but there is something that does not change. Fighting with the heat, when putting wood in the kiln, the potters will pray for good production as their predecessors have been doing in the past ages. You will be able to see the potters which used to be in the past centuries.
The potters target to heat the kiln up to 1300C, and that is when the clay becomes pottery, which god only knows whether it will be successful or not.
Easy to say, to put fire, but you will surely be amazed by the mountains of pile of wood a potter will put in the kiln. The heat of the kiln, and the flower of fire that comes out from the kiln. Also towards the end, where the heat reaches to maximum temperature, you will feel the kiln also fighting with the heat an fires coming from the cracks.
The most recommended timing to see is from the afternoon to late night of 14th when the heat peaks up, and the potters are putting woods one after another to keep the temperature at maximum.
Please note: On these two days, the kilns are open to show the very moment of firing and the potters are welcoming you. That said, it is also the moment for them where they put all effort for the past months for. They may not be able to answer to your questions or talk to you. Please forgive that situation in advance.
The potteries will be shown at the exhibition held in Tonoh-kan from 25 June to 3 July.
